Software Export Industry

The software industry comprises businesses involved in the development, maintenance and publication of computer software. The software industry started in the mid-1970s at the time of the personal computer revolution. The industry also includes software services, such as training and consultancy. The largest and most profitable of software companies are located in the United States. As of 2006, the client software industry is dominated by Microsoft[citation needed]. Software Magazine's 500 list in 2005 shows the total amount of revenue brought in by software companies per locale, with the highest being California due to Silicon Valley and the amount of Fortune 500 software companies residing in that area.

Software Industry Professionals is one of the world's largest groups representing members of the software industry, with over 1900 members in 93 countries.
new software service economy is rapidly unfolding and is causing disruption in the software industry. Ironically, some of the first victims of this new economy may be some pioneers of the software-as-a-service movement. We are now at point where implementers of SaaS capabilities are being disrupted by newer SaaS capabilities. Services that are built largely from other services are a reality, and offer many clear advantages.
India's IT, software industry for a bright future

India's IT, software and electronics companies are confident about prospects for growth of exports in the coming years, with industry leaders saying vast opportunities were opening up in new markets in the Middle East, Africa, South and Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe.

India's domination in the IT and software sector and its growing reputation as one of the world's best outsourcing destinations have created a good basis for future prospects. According to participants in a major export promotion drive by the industry at the just-concluded IT and computer fair CeBIT at Hannover in Germany has cited better growth opportunities for the Indian software companies.

A recent study in UK shows that about 30 companies mounted an impressive show on the latest India has to offer in the areas of computer software and services, IT, electronics hardware and telecommunication equipments. Export business inquiries worth several million dollars have been generated by India's promotion campaign at the CeBIT, the world's largest computer and IT fair, according to ESC.

In the meantime, efforts will be made to step up India's software and IT enabled services' exports to Germany by organising buyer-seller meets, exchanging IT delegations and fostering contacts with trade organisations.

With the success of India's IT and computer software sector had been so remarkable that many other nations are now trying to copy it. "India is becoming a world hub of brainpower activities and this holds great potential for growth in the coming years."

India's exports of computer software, IT services and electronics products are projected to grow by around 30 per cent during the current financial year to USD 32 billion, according to ESC.

The move to SaaS applications built on SaaS is a much more profound shift than the move from on-premise applications to SaaS applications. The software industry is beginning to display characteristics that mimic the supply chains and service layering that are commonplace in other industries like transportation, financial services, insurance, food processing, etc. A simple set of categories like applications, middleware and infrastructure no longer represents the reality of software products or vendors. Instead of a small number of very large, vertically integrated vendors, we are seeing an explosion of smaller, more focused software services and vendors.
